Education and Community
STAR Council
About the Program
S.T.A.R. = Students Take A Role
STAR Council offers any Memphis-area high school student the opportunity to "take a role" in their community, at the Orpheum, and in their theatrical future by learning and volunteering. The program allows students to explore the intersection of theatre and community service, all while developing valuable skills and connecting with their peers.
Program Activities
Monthly Meetings
Students will meet once a month to explore volunteer opportunities, participate in team-building activities, and learn how theatre can serve the community.
Volunteer Service
Students will be required to complete service hours through fun opportunities such as ushering for Broadway musicals, assisting with Kids Night on Broadway, and supporting the High School Musical Theatre Awards.
Guest Speakers
Orpheum staff "headliners" will speak to students about professional opportunities in the theatrical world and how every role contributes to the Orpheum's mission.
Participation Requirements
To participate in STAR Council, students must meet the following criteria:
- Attend all monthly meetings (listed below).
- Volunteer for at least 3 service opportunities outside of the meetings throughout the year.
- Complete at least 1 service opportunity during the month of May for the Orpheum High School Musical Theatre Awards.
Important Note: Missing more than two meetings or completing fewer than three service opportunities will result in the student being ineligible to return the following year.
